Mike M. is the owner behind Iron Mako Media and runs Bench & Berm hands-on. He built this site for the new shooter he wishes someone had helped: what to buy first, what the numbers on the box mean, and how to act at the range so nobody has to tell you twice.

How Mike picks gear

Every ranking on Bench & Berm starts from what can be checked. For hearing protection, that's the Noise Reduction Rating printed on the EPA label. For shooting glasses, it's the ANSI Z87.1 high-impact mark. For bags, cases, targets and cleaning kits, it's the maker's published capacity, contents, locking features and caliber coverage. Each pick is scored on the published rubric, and every spec links to the page it came from.

Mike doesn't claim to have tested the gear on the site, and the site doesn't either. If that changes for a specific product, the page will say so, with a dated note explaining what was actually done.

What you won't see here

• Invented credentials, “expert panels” or a team of testers that doesn't exist.
• Made-up range stories or “after weeks at the range” claims.
• Prices we can't verify. Amazon sets prices and changes them often, so we send you to the listing.
• Firearm or ammunition recommendations.
