Cleaning your gun after the range

If you own one handgun and have never cleaned it, you need three things: a cleaning kit sized for your caliber, one bottle of CLP (a cleaner, lubricant and preservative in one), and a mat to work on. Cleaning isn't complicated, but it is gun handling, and it starts before you open the kit: the gun is unloaded and verified clear the way your owner's manual shows, and the ammunition is in another room. The NRA's cleaning rule says to make absolutely sure the gun is unloaded, keep the action open while you clean, and "be sure that no ammunition is present in the cleaning area."

How the category splits

Cleaning gear falls into five groups, and a beginner needs something from the first three:

• Pistol kits. A rod or cable, brushes, jags and patches for handgun calibers, in a case small enough for a drawer or a range bag. The right starting point if a handgun is your only gun.
• Universal kits. The same idea for a house with a rifle or shotgun too. Otis says its Elite kit covers .17 caliber through 12 gauge. More pieces, more coverage.

• Mats and wipes. A mat protects the table and keeps small parts in one place; lead-removal wipes are for your hands when there's no sink nearby.

What changes from one model to the next

Most kits look alike in the photo. The differences that matter are on the contents list:

• Caliber coverage. Some kits cover one caliber family (the Otis 9mm kit lists .357, .375, .380, .38 Special and 9mm); others cover every handgun caliber from .22 to .45, or everything in the house.

The beginner mistake

The mistake isn't buying the wrong kit. It's treating cleaning as a chore instead of gun handling: sitting down at the kitchen table with the gun, the kit and a box of ammunition all within reach, and skipping the chamber check because "I unloaded it at the range."

The fix is a routine you run the same way every time. Unload the gun and verify it's clear, the way your manual shows. Put all the ammunition, loaded magazines included, in another room. Then clean, and field-strip only as far as your manual shows. A close second mistake is too much oil; Glock's care guidance warns that "too much lubrication can affect the pistol's performance."
