Holiday gift guide for a new shooter

What to buy for somebody who has just started shooting, in the three bands people actually shop in. Every pick here already won a place on one of our ranked lists, and every card links to the page that explains why.

How to use this

Gifts for a new shooter go wrong in two directions: too personal, or too generic. Anything that touches the firearm itself — a holster, a sight, a grip — needs to fit their specific gun and their specific hands, so it is a bad surprise. Everything on this page is the opposite: it fits anybody, it gets used on the first trip, and none of it needs a serial number.

  • Under $50 is the stocking-stuffer band: hearing protection, snap caps, targets, pasters and wipes. This is also where the single best first gift sits — a shooter can always use another set of plugs.
  • Under $100 is the one-good-thing band: electronic muffs that let them hear a range command, Z87+ glasses that fit under those muffs, a cleaning kit that covers the whole house.
  • Splurge is for the person who already owns the basics: a bag or case they will still be using in ten years.

Two things we will not do: we don't print a price into our own writing (prices come from the listing and move daily), and we don't recommend firearms or ammunition as gifts, whatever the season. If you want the same picks sorted for a deal rather than for a recipient, the Black Friday range gear page has them.

One thing worth saying out loud

If this is the first range trip for whoever you are buying for, the most useful thing in the box costs nothing: send them what actually happens on a first range trip and the four safety rules alongside the gift. Gear is the easy half.

More gift lists: all our gift guides, gifts for a new gun owner, shooting gifts for dad and stocking stuffers.
