Your first range bag has one job: get everything you need to the shooting bench in one trip, so nothing gets left at home. That means ear and eye protection, targets and a stapler, ammunition in its box, a magazine loader, lead wipes and your paperwork, with a padded place for the pistol that keeps it apart from everything else. The gun itself needs its own answer: a case you can lock. A bag carries your gear; a case is what the pistol travels in. You'll want both, and it's worth sorting out the case before your first trip rather than at the range door.

How the category splits

Five kinds of product live in this hub, and each suits a different shooter:

• Range bags are shoulder or hand-carry bags with a main compartment, outside pockets and usually some pistol storage built in: padded sleeves, a pistol rug or a padded section. They suit anyone driving to a range with one or more pistols.

• Lock boxes are small hard cases with the lock built in, by keypad, key or combination, often with a steel cable to tether them.
• Range boxes and ammo cans are sealed plastic boxes for ammunition and small gear. Some add a handgun tray and a magazine case, so they can stand in for a bag at the bench.

What changes from one model to the next

Once you know the type, a handful of published specs separate one model from another. These are the ones we score on, and the ones worth checking on the maker's page before you buy:

• Capacity. Makers list it in liters or as inside dimensions. The bags we track run from a compact 9 L up to a 47 L duffel. Inside dimensions matter more than liters if you need a case or ammo can to fit.
• Pistol storage. How many pistols, and how: three sleeves, a single rug, a foam cradle, or a padded section with no stated count.
• Magazine storage. Some bags publish a count or include a carrier; several don't mention it at all.
• Locking. Soft bags offer lockable zippers or pulls. Hard cases have padlock holes or tabs. Lock boxes have the lock built in. These are three different levels of security.
• Build. A rigid bottom with feet, O-ring seals on hard cases and boxes, and water-resistance claims, each as the maker states it.
• TSA wording. Some case makers print their own TSA language, and each says something different. We quote it word for word and never treat it as a TSA approval.

The beginner mistake

The mix-up to avoid is treating a soft bag with lockable zippers as a locked gun case. Lockable zippers keep a bag closed and discourage curious hands, but they aren't the same thing as a locked hard case. For flying, TSA says firearms must be "unloaded and locked in a hard-sided container and transported as checked baggage only" (TSA). For driving, the federal safe-passage law, 18 U.S.C. § 926A, sets its own conditions, and state and local laws vary on top of it.

The fix is simple. Give the pistol its own lockable case, keep ammunition in its box in a separate compartment, and let the bag carry everything else.
