5.11 names its range bags after what they are for rather than what size they are, so Range Ready, Range Master and Range Ready Trainer all sound like the same bag. They are not. The line splits on capacity, on what arrives in the box, and on one spec that matters more than either: whether the maker publishes lockable zippers.
Everything below is quoted from 5.11's own product pages, linked in Sources. If you want the cross-brand ranking rather than one brand's line, our best range bags page compares 5.11 against Savior, Vertx and Allen on the same rubric.
The three side by side
These are the three range bags 5.11 currently lists with full published specs. The figures are the maker's own.

The one spec that separates them
A range bag holds a firearm in a car and, often, in a building that is not your home. That makes lockable zippers the spec worth checking first, and it is the one place the 5.11 line genuinely divides. 5.11 publishes YKK lockable zippers for the Range Ready Trainer Bag 50L. It does not publish lockable zippers for the Range Ready Bag 43L or for the Range Master Duffel Set.
Capacity: 43, 47 or 50 liters
All three publish both a volume and a set of dimensions, which is more than most range-bag makers do and makes them easy to measure against the kit on your table. The Range Ready Bag is 43 L (2,639 cu in) with a main compartment of 9.5 in H x 17.5 in L x 10.5 in D. The Range Ready Trainer Bag is 50 L (3,051 cu in) at 10 in H x 21 in L x 14.5 in D. The Range Master Duffel Set is 47 L (2,868 cu in) at 11.5 in H x 21.5 in L x 11.5 in D.
For a first kit, the gap between them matters less than it sounds. Ear and eye protection, a cleaning kit, a box or two of ammunition and one pistol rug fit comfortably in any of the three. Our range bag checklist is the list to measure against before you pick a size, and a bag carried half empty is heavier than a smaller one carried full.
What comes in the box
This is where the Range Master Duffel earns its name. 5.11 sells it as a set: the duffel plus a 5.11 Single Pistol Case and small and medium Range Master pouches. If you own one pistol and no case yet, that is a case you do not have to buy separately.
The Range Ready Bag instead includes a removable tote bag and a removable brass bag, which is the detail nobody expects to use and then uses every trip at an outdoor range. The Range Ready Trainer Bag comes with removable internal dividers and elastic bands rather than any named extra, so the inside is set to your kit instead of to a fixed layout.
What is actually in stock
5.11 lists five bags under the Range banner, and on 2026-11-06 only two of them could be bought from 5.11 directly. The Range Ready Bag 43L and the Range Ready Trainer Bag 50L were in stock. The Range Master Duffel Set 47L, the Range Master Qualifier Set 27L and the Range Master Backpack Set 33L all showed out of stock on 5.11's own store. Stock moves, so the buy buttons here go straight to the maker's page where you can see the current state rather than ours.
Which one to buy
If you want zippers you can padlock, the answer is the Range Ready Trainer Bag, and it is the only answer in this line. If you shoot several magazines and want the brass bag and tote in the box, the Range Ready Bag is the one most people mean when they say "the 5.11 range bag", and our full review of it goes through what 5.11 publishes spec by spec. If you have no pistol case yet and the Range Master Duffel Set comes back into stock, the included case changes the maths.
And if you are not committed to the brand, read best range bags first. Savior and Vertx both publish lockable zippers across their range bags rather than on one model, and the Savior Specialist publishes three pistol sleeves, which no 5.11 range bag does.
In detail
The contenders, in full

The one most people mean
5.11 Range Ready Bag 43L
43 L built around magazines: 5.11 says the drop-down rear compartment stores 8, and a removable tote and brass bag come in the box. In stock on 5.11's own store.

- Organization (25%)
- 9.8
- Lockability (20%)
- 8.2
- Materials & build (15%)
- 8.6
- Carry options (15%)
- 8.9
Why we recommend it
- 43 L, with main-compartment dimensions published
- 5.11 says the rear drop-down compartment stores 8 magazines
- A removable tote bag and removable brass bag are included
- Padded, separated storage for more than one pistol
Good to know
- 5.11 doesn't say how many pistols the padded storage holds
- Lockable zippers aren't mentioned by the maker
The trade-off
A different pick suits you better if you want zippers you can padlock; lockable zippers aren't mentioned by the maker, while the Savior Specialist Range Bag and Vertx COF bags list them.

The only one with published lockable zippers

How the 9.6 score breaks down, criterion by criterion
- Capacity (25%)
- 9.9
- Organization (25%)
- 9.8
- Lockability (20%)
- 9.6
- Materials & build (15%)
- 9.1
- Carry options (15%)
- 8.9
Why we recommend it
- YKK lockable zippers, which is the one thing 5.11 does not publish for the Range Ready Bag or the Range Master duffels
- 50 L with published dimensions, so you can measure it against the kit on your table before buying
- Removable dividers and elastic bands mean the inside is set to your kit rather than to a fixed layout
- A PE board base and fully padded construction, so the bag holds its shape when you set it down loaded
Good to know
- 5.11 does not publish a pistol count or dedicated pistol sleeves for this bag the way it does for the Range Ready Bag
- 600D polyester is a lighter shell than the 1000D fabrics some range bags publish
The trade-off
A different pick suits you better if you want a bag that arrives with pistol rugs already in it; 5.11 publishes padded pistol storage for the Range Ready Bag but not for this one, so you would be adding your own rugs.

- Organization (25%)
- 9.4
- Lockability (20%)
- 8.2
- Materials & build (15%)
- 8.6
- Carry options (15%)
- 8.6
Why we recommend it
- 47 L (2,868 cu in), more than the 43 L Range Ready Bag
- A Single Pistol Case comes in the set
- Small and medium pouches for sorting smaller gear
Good to know
- 5.11's own store showed it out of stock when we last checked on 2026-11-04; the Amazon button beside it is the other way in
- Lockable zippers aren't mentioned by the maker
- How many pistols fit beyond the included single case isn't published by the maker
The trade-off
A different pick suits you better if you'd rather carry less; at 47 L it's a large duffel, and a first-timer with one pistol may be better served by the 23 L Allen Eliminator Rangemaster or the 15 L Vertx COF Heavy.

How we scored this
Every pick, scored on numbers you can check
Every pick here is labeled Researched: we compiled each maker's published specs (the EPA-labeled NRR on hearing protection, the Z87+ mark on glasses), read the manuals, checked the standards behind them, and scored everything on a public rubric. Every figure links to where it came from, and marketing claims are labeled “maker's claim,” so you can see exactly why a pick ranks where it does.
Scores are editorial judgments built from that documented research, published on our 8.4–9.8 scale: anything that fails a gate, or that we wouldn't hand a new shooter, never reaches a page, so the number tells you how much better one good option is than the next. Commissions never set a score or decide a pick. The rubric and its weights are published.

Specs come from each maker's own pages and data sheets (linked on every product); ratings like NRR and Z87+ are explained from the standards and agencies behind them.
